The Detroit Lions backed up the armored truck to pay quarterback Matthew Stafford a bunch of money and expectations have increased in Motown. Meanwhile, Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer will likely be on a very short lease this season when the Lions host the Cardinals in the season-opener on Sunday.
The Lions (9-7 in 2016) earned a playoff berth, primarily as a result of the performance on Stafford, who is viewed as a quarterback on the rise after back-to-back strong seasons. The Lions rewarded Stafford with a five-year, $135 million contract extension in August, the richest in league history and one that will make him the league’s highest-paid player.
With the extra money comes increased expectations and scrutiny. Stafford’s decision-making has improved, but he still make questionable throws. If he can get good performances from running backs Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick, Stafford could be better than he was last year.
The Cardinals (7-8-1) are coming off a hugely disappointing season after winning the NFC West title in 2015. Much of the blame was placed on the 37-year-old Palmer, who slogged through a season where his statistics represented a startling decline from his career year in 2015. Palmer won’t be expected to do as much this year as the offense is more centered around running back David Johnson, the versatile player who is aiming post at least 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in 2017.
