England secured a date with France in the Women’s Rugby World Cup semi-finals, with a 47-26 win in Dublin over a highly-rated USA side that secured their place at the top of Pool B.
The seven-try performance, which saw great cohesion between England’s backs and forwards, sent a message to the rest of the teams in the tournament, particularly in the first half, although the defence flagged somewhat in the second.
A physical American side put up a fight, scoring four tries in their attempt to secure the best second-placed pool finish and follow England into the semi-finals.
The Americans took the fourth semi-final place and will take on top seeds New Zealand.
England’s head coach Simon Middleton was happy with making the semi-finals but said his side needed to be “tougher” in defence in the second half after effectively beating the Americans in the first 40 minutes, with the score 33-7 at half time.
“We’re really pleased we are now in the semi-final and we have done what we set out to do but I think everybody would have preferred us to finish the game better than we did because we were absolutely outstanding the first half.
“I thought our execution was absolutely fantastic and we had the job done by half-time.
“We have got a balance to our game, and we were saying, ‘if they give penalties away, we will punish them’. We wanted to get the job done as efficiently as we could.
